Comprehensive understanding to the public health risk of environmental microbes via a microbiome-based index

Bacteria are ubiquitous in built environments(BE)and different human body sites.Among the myriad of microbes,the pathogenic bacteria are of great interest to public health and safety,which were the cause of many public health emergency outbreaks,e.g.,Streptococcus suis,Salmonella and Escherichia coli(Bielaszewska et al.,2011;Sawyer et al.,2021).These outbreaks warn us that the next public threat caused by pathogenic bacteria might be imminent.Moreover,due to the increase in urbanization in the last 150 years,90%of human interactions are within built and indoor environments(Lax et al.,2015).Thus,humans are mostly exposed to the relatively stable yet complex microbial communities and exchange their micro-biota(Gao et al.,2007;Grice and Segre,2011)within BE through skin contact(Tringe et al.,2008),respiratory activity,and skin shedding(Lax et al.,2014).Therefore,assessing the disease risk for human living microbial environment,especially screening pathogenic bacte-ria,is critical to monitor and control the transmission of pathogens and prevent the impending infectious disease outbreaks.
