KLF6 facilitates differentiation of odontoblasts through modulating the expression of P21 in vitro

INTRODUCTION Tooth development is impelled by the epithelial-mesenchymal interaction, and it includes initiation, bud, cap, and bell stages.1 During this process, adjacent mesenchymal cells are induced by signals from the basement membrane of the epithelium to differentiate into odontoblasts.2 Odontoblasts are essential for producing non-collagenous proteins, such as dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP). They are also positive participants in dental tissue mineralization.3–4 In mature teeth, mesenchymal stem cells in the dental pulp will differentiate into odontoblasts and secrete mineralized matrix under pathologic conditions. Multiple signaling pathways are hypothesized to have important functions in odontogenesis and dental tissue renewal.5 However, the details of these mechan-isms remain unknown.
