Protein tyrosine phosphatases in skeletal development and diseases

INTRODUCTION Mammalian skeletal tissue is formed by two distinct mechanisms:intramembranous and endochondral ossification. The former produces many of the craniofacial bones directly from the condensation of mesenchymal progenitors; the latter is respon-sible for forming the rest of the skeleton by generating bone through a cartilage intermediate.
