Excessive Intake of Gardenia Pigments Requires Vigilance against Accumulation Risk

Gardenia pigments are widely used as additives in food and consequently people suffer from daily overexposure to these pigments,especially in case they consume dietary supplements that use derivatives of Gardenia jasminoides.We have observed a very unusual adverse reaction clinically,due to herbal and dietary supplement consumption,characterized by blue-green pigmentation around the eyes(i.e.a distinctive"gardenia blue"facial appearance).In this case,there is a suspicion that excessive intake of gardenia pigment requires vigilance against accumulation risk.We report the case of a patient who,after using a 60-day Chinese medicine(CM)containing Gardenia,evolved into dark blue-green circles around his eyes.
