Porous ionomers boosting the performances of proton exchange membrane fuel cells

As one of the clean energy sources,proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)have attracted considerable research attention.However,high cost of platinum(Pt)-based catalysts and limited power density hampered PEMFC commercialization[1,2].It is highly desirable to improve the fuel cell performance with lower Pt loading.
In the cathode of PEMFCs,the catalyst layer(CL),which com-prises a catalyst and an ionomer,is sandwiched between a gas dif-fusion layer(GDL)and a proton exchange membrane to fabricate a membrane electrode assembly(MEA).The CL provides the critical gas-water-catalyst three-phase interfaces for electrochemical oxy-gen reduction reactions(ORR)and therefore dominates the cell performance and durability.To produce a CL with high catalytic activity,the CL needs to transport protons and gas required by the reactions to the Pt/C catalyst and removes the water generated during the reactions[3-5].In addition,the ionomer should func-tion as a good dispersant that prevents catalyst agglomeration and enhances the mass transport of ORR active species[6,7].
