A perspective on the PGM-free metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts for PEMFC

Introduction Atomically dispersed transition metals embedded in nitrogen-doped carbons(M-N-C)represent a typical kind of platinum group-free(PGM-free)catalyst which is considered as a potential candidate for the cathode of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)[1-3].Apart from their low cost,the advantage of the M-N-C catalysts over PGM is further underlined by their good poisoning-resistance to impurities in fossil-derived hydrogen,such as carbon monoxide and sulfur-containing compounds[4,5].How-ever,there is still a certain gap between the performance of up-to-date PGM-free catalysts and the DOE's 2020 target.In specific,the 2020 target requires a current density of 44 mA cm-2 at 0.90 ViR-free with 1 bar H2 and O2,and the current density at 0.8 V should get to 300 mA cm-2 in the practical relevant conditions(1 bar H2-air)[6].So far,rare PGM-free catalysts can deliver targeted current densi-ties,especially in H2-air flow.
