Visualization of on-surface polymerization

On-surface syntheses of one-dimensional linear structures and two-dimensional networks through polymerization have attracted increasing attention of chemists and surface scientists by providing new materials and new insights into traditional reactions.Polymerization can be divided into stepwise poly-merization and chain polymerization.On-surface stepwise polymerizations of monomers such as alkyne[1]and halogenate arenes[2]have been widely studied by scanning tunneling microscopy(STM).For instance,alkane polymerization can take place on surface[3],but is hard to achieve via solution synthesis.Due to the characteristics of the anchored active centers,uni-directional propagation and fast growth rate,chain poly-merization is,however,difficult to realize on regular surfaces,not to mention on-surface observation of ethylene polymeriza-tion at the molecular level.
