Organics challenge inorganics for efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Artificial photosynthesis provides a sustainable approach toward a carbon-neutral or net-zero economy [1].Photoelectro-chemical (PEC) water splitting is one of the artificial photosynthe-sis techniques that directly convert intermittent sunlight into clean and storable H2 fuel [2].Due to the complex 4e-/4H+ process cou-pled with O-O bond formation step,it is widely acknowledged that the oxidation half-reaction is the efficiency-limiting factor in water splitting [3].Therefore,developing highly efficient and robust water-oxidation photoanodes is crucial for realizing practical solar fuel production.
