UV-activated single-layer WSe2 for highly sensitive NO2 detection

Transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)materials have received significantly increasing attention in gas sensors because of their capability of working at room temperature(RT).However,the bottlenecks such as low response,high detection limit and sluggish recovery greatly impede their utilization in real sensors.In this work,we propose a highly sensitive NO2 sensor based on single-layer WSe2 grown by chemical vapor deposition(CVD).Under ultraviolet(UV)light activation,the sensor demonstrates remarkable response to NO2,which surpasses the previously reported sensors based on both single-layer and few-layer WSe2.The sensor response to 1 x 10-6 NO2 at RT(25℃)under UV illumination is up to 9,revealing a fourfold enhance-ment compared to the sensor without UV activation.The sensor shows good linear response within the concentration range of 0.5×10-6-20.0 x 10-6 NO2 under UV illumi-nation.In addition,the sensor also shows good selectivity to NO2,feasible repeatability and stability(4 weeks),and fast response-recovery(10 x 10-6 NO2,53 s/90 s),which provides a decent potential for reliable NO2 sensors.
