Principal element design of pyrochlore-fluorite dual-phase medium-and high-entropy ceramics

1.Introduction
Rare earth zirconate(RE2Zr2O7,RE=La-Lu,Y or Sc)is a kind of significantly important structural or functional ceramic[1,2].It possesses extensive application in numerous fields,such as in thermal barrier coatings(TBCs)[3-5],high-level radioactive wastes[6-8],etc.,due to the excellent thermal stability,low thermal con-ductivity and low oxygen ion diffusivity.The phase structure of conventional rare earth zirconate is strongly linked with the ionic radius ratio of RE3+to Zr4+[7,9].The latest reported articles point out that the limiting ratios of the various type of the crystal struc-tures are as follows:disordered fluorite phase<1.21<rhombo-hedral δ-phase<1.42-1.44<ordered pyrochlore phase<1.78-1.83<monoclinic pyrochlore phase<1.92[10,11].However,it is demonstrated that doping trivalent cation with a large differ-ence in ionic size results in the formation of dual-phase structure.Ren et al.[9]found that both La2Zr2O7-rich pyrochlore phase and Yb2Zr2O7-rich fluorite phase generated in the LaYbZr2O7 ceramic.Guo et al.[12]further confirmed that there existed pyrochlore and fluorite dual-phase in(Nd0.9Sc0.1)2Zr2O7 ceramic.In addition,the investigation on the La2O3-ZrO2-Yb2O3 ternary phase diagram ver-ified that there were areas where the pyrochlore and fluorite co-existed[13].Furthermore,these pyrochlore-fluorite dual-phase ce-ramics show superior thermophysical and mechanical properties to their single-phase counterparts[9,14,15].
