The AUKUS Trilateral Security Partnership: Features, Implications and Prospects

In September 2021, the leaders of Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States announced the establishment of an enhanced trilateral security partnership called AUKUS.1 Over the past few months, the three countries have made some progress in Australia's nuclear-powered submarine program and advanced collaboration in capacity building. Up to now, academic discussions on AUKUS within China mainly focus on the nuclear-powered submarine program, with different views on the nature, priorities and driving forces of the partnership. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively examine its characteristics and explore its impact on the US alliance and partnership system, the Asia-Pacific regional order and the broder international norms, so as to better grasp its prospects as well as the trends of regional and global security.
