Spinal Cord Mapping of Respiratory Intercostal Motoneurons in Adult Mice

Dear Editor,
Respiration is a vital and continuous physiological process depending on the output from spinal respiratory motoneu-rons to excite the inspiratory pump muscles[1-3].In mammals,phrenic motoneurons and intercostal motoneu-rons are the main spinal respiratory motoneurons,which innervate the diaphragm and intercostal muscles(IMs),respectively[4].The IMs and diaphragm act synergistically for lung ventilation under physiological conditions[5,6].The contribution of IMs to respiratory movements is significantly increased under pathological conditions such as diaphragmatic paralysis,hypercapnia,and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease[7-9].
