Controlled location of S vacancies in MoS2 nanosheets for high-performance hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol

Introduction
In a joint contribution among many Chinese research Institutes,a recent paper published on Nature Catalysis reported the use of sulfur vacancy-rich MoS2 as a novel catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol[1].A commentary on this paper was also pub-lished on the same journal[2]reporting as a summary:"Highly active,selective and stable catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol are immensely sought after.Now,using a broad range of spectroscopic methods,in-plane double sulfur vacancies of MoS2 sheets have been suggested to catalyse this reaction using an unu-sual mechanism".These premises suggest a breakthrough result in methanol synthesis directly from CO2,a reaction playing a crucial role in the frame of energy transition[3].It is thus worth to analyze and discuss in a more detail (in particular,from an industrial per-spective) the cited paper for the readers of Journal of Energy Chem-istry,being one of the topics characterizing the journal interests[4,5].
