Cr(Ⅵ)detoxification and simultaneous selective recovery of Cr resource from wastewater via photo-chemical extraction using biomass

Hexavalent chromium(Cr(Ⅵ))is found in a variety of effluents,such as electroplating,printing,tanning,dyes,ceramics,etc.[1,2].The acute toxicity of Cr(Ⅵ),the tremendous industrial consump-tion and the low deposit of chromium element make it essential to detoxicate Cr(Ⅵ)and recover Cr from Cr(Ⅵ)containing wastew-ater[3].Shortcomings such as harsh reaction conditions,high cost,additive of toxic reductants,secondary pollution,and lack of selec-tivity are present in commonly reported approaches or traditional methods(Table S1 online)[4-6].The utilization of abundant natu-ral biomass for environmental remediation is in line with sustain-able development[7].Xu et al.[8]and Shen et al.[9]converted biomass into photocatalyst or absorbent for Cr(Ⅵ)removal.Never-theless,the harsh conditions like high temperature and pressure,the concentrated acid as well as the introduction of other metal ions required for the preparation of biomass-based materials make these approaches complicated,not cost-effective,and less environ-mentally friendly.Here,we developed a novel method that uses native biomass(i.e.,starch,chitin,and chitosan)directly without any further treatment for efficient and selective extraction of aque-ous Cr(Ⅵ)under visible light irradiation and mild reaction condition.
