Smart 6S roadmap for deciphering the migration and risk of heavy metals in soil and groundwater systems at brownfield sites nationwide in China

Rapid industrialization and economic development have left a great amount of industrial facilities,such as chemical,smelting and mining industries,throughout the country over the past few decades.As a result,a wide range of toxic pollutants are generated and discharged directly or indirectly into the soil environment[1].A national soil contamination survey conducted in 146 industrial sites and 690 highly polluting enterprises by the Ministry of Envi-ronmental Protection and the Ministry of Land and Resources,China revealed that over one-third of these sites were contami-nated by heavy metals[2].Among these polluted sites,many are abandoned without proper disposal.The discharged heavy metals can undergo a series of complex physicochemical and biological interfacial reactions with the soil media and further migrate to the groundwater environment through leaching,percolation,and surface water-groundwater interactions[3].
