Quantifying Electrochemical Processes in Batteries and Beyond

Technologies based on efficient,reliable,and safe electrochemical pro-cesses will be central to building a carbon neutral,more equitable soci-ety.[1-4]For these technologies—including batteries,fuel cells,electrolyzers,and energy conversion for chemicals and fuels—under-standing operational processes,including those that lead to performance losses,is important for the development of cost-effective devices for energy storage and transportation with longer lifetimes,reduced envi-ronmental impact and improved safety.[5]An additional consideration,often ignored,is the necessity of understanding and predicting the expected waste,for planning how these technologies will be recycled or disposedof,and who will bear the financial,environmental and health costs.[6]
