Tafel scan schemes for microbiologically influenced corrosion of carbon steel and stainless steel

1.Introduction
Microbial biofilms cause microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC),which is one of the operational risks that can lead to equip-ment failures in the oil and gas industry and other industries[1-4].Mitigation measures such as biocide treatment and corrosion monitoring programs are implemented to ensure vital equipment integrity[5,6].The mechanism investigations in MIC can assist case analyses,field detections and biocide treatment strategies[7-9].Various electrochemical methods have been successfully used in MIC mechanism studies and biocide treatment assessments to sup-port weight loss data trend qualitatively[10],although the theoret-ical justification for their uses in biofilm systems has not been ex-tended from their established uses in abiotic systems.Unlike one-shot cumulative weight loss data,electrochemical tests have the advantage that they can be scanned daily or more often as long as the working electrode(WE)surface is unaltered by the scans[11].This is typically true for LPR(linear polarization resistance),EIS(electrochemical impedance spectroscopy)and EFM(electrochem-ical frequency modulation)scans,which use small voltage(e.g.,±10 mV)DC or low amplitude(e.g.,5 mV)AC signals[12-17].
