How to Build a High-Resolution Digital Geological Timeline?

1 QUESTION FORMULATION Time and space are the two basic axes to characterize the existence of matter. Without time, there would be no rate ("No dates, No rates"). The Earth has a history of approximately 4.5 billion years, leaving behind a myriad of geological records, and the geologic timeline is the only common language avail-able to unravel the evolutionary history of the Earth. In the past two hundred years, geoscientists from all over the world have been working to explore approaches to reconstruct the evolu-tionary history of Earth. The emergence of the principle of fau-nal succession in the 18th century provided an important theo-retical means for the construction of geologic timescales (Sch-neer and Yochelson, 1989). By the 1960s, the study of stratigra-phy and geochronology has reached a new stage due to the technological advancement and multidisciplinary approach that integrated lithostratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy, chemostratigra-phy, magnetostratigraphy and geochronology. Subsequently, the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) was found-ed on demand to resolve the discrepancies in the demarcation and classification of chronostratigraphy by different regions, experts, and methods. The ICS aims to establish a universal standard chronostratigraphy for intercontinental and regional correlations, i.e., geologic timescales.
