Reconceptualization of the Energy Transition

In 2021, the futures price of the global crude oil price benchmarks, Brent and WTI, rose by 50.63％ and 55.72％ respectively, then continued in an upward trend in 2022 to hit a new high since 2008, reaching USD 139.13/barrel and USD 130.5/barrel respectively; the Dutch TTF Natural Gas Futures price, the European natural gas price benchmark, rose by 267.85％, reaching a high in the year of 187.785 EUR/MW·h, up by 881.99％, then continued in an upward trend in 2022, reaching 345 EUR/MW·h, with a highest increase of 390.45％; even though the current price has fallen back, it remains at 100 EUR/MW·h. The electricity prices in European countries have reached record highs, and the day-ahead average prices in almost all European countries have risen above 300 EUR/MW·h, with nearly 400 EUR/MW·h in France and Switzerland. At the same time, the European carbon price rose by 91.08％ in 2021, up to 90.75 EUR/ton, an increase of 115.4 EUR/ton, resulting in a reversal from "gas to coal" to "coal to gas". The coal consumption in European regions grew rapidly and the coal price increased significantly. The sharp rise in international energy prices has significantly increased people's expenditure on living energy. European and American countries are facing the highest inflation rate in the past 30 years and greater risks for future economic development.
