Astrocyte-derived ATP:A New Etiological Factor for Autism Spectrum Disorder

In the central nervous system,purinergic signaling plays an important role in maintaining the functions of neurons,astrocytes,and microglia,thereby regulating brain home-ostasis,with consequences for higher-order cognitive processes [1].ATP released from astrocytes in conjunction with several additional signaling molecules modulates neuronal circuits.In recent decades,the pathological potential of astrocyte-derived ATP that contributes to and aggravates various types of neurological and psychiatric illnesses [such as Parkinson's disease,Alzheimer's disease,epilepsy,and major depressive disorder (MDD)] has been increasingly acknowledged [2].Emerging evidence demonstrates that purinergic receptors are potential thera-peutic targets,and P2X7 receptor (R) antagonists might improve the conditions created by ATP-induced neuroin-flammation [3].
