New understanding of the response of permafrost carbon cycling to climate warming

Carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems is an important factor that affects the level and accumulation rate of global atmospheric greenhouse gases and determines the stability of the global cli-mate.From 2010 to 2019,31%of CO2 emissions caused by human activities were absorbed by vegetation in terrestrial ecosystems and 23%by the ocean,while the remaining 46%accumulated in the atmosphere.However,as the climate continues to warm,it is expected that after 2100,the carbon loss from terrestrial ecosys-tems may exceed their carbon absorption,converting them from carbon sinks into carbon sources.One of the main processes affect-ing such future changes in terrestrial carbon sinks is the release of carbon caused by the melting of permafrost.Changes in permafrost dynamics greatly increase the uncertainty in regional and global climate-system changes.
