Is"plume interaction induced migration of the Hawaiian-Emperor Seamounts"a step too far?
文献摘要:
The contribution by Sun et al.[1]is an interesting look at the complex problem of Emperor Seamounts(ES)formation and geody-namic implications. The authors interpret the ES age progression to reflect mantle plume motion, arguing that variations in volcanic propagation rate indicate deflection by an ancient, subducted spreading ridge. They provide two supporting models. One is a numerical model suggesting that a vertical plume can be tilted by near ridge mantle flow and that plume material moves up the base of the lithosphere towards the ridge, leading to plume volcanism near a ridge and far from the stem. The other is a two-phase mixing model to explain ES geochemistry as a mixture of plume and ridge materials.Although the interpretations are plausible, they are founded on sparse data representing complex phenomena, and thus may be misleading.Herein I will describe some problems with the interpretations. For brevity, further discussion,a table of radiomet-ric dates, and references are contained in the Supplementary materials.
