"A persisting major gap in our paleontologi-cal record,however,is the almost complete ab-sence of any trace of an earlier jawed fish.Al-though the common ancestor must have existed well before the Devonian,there is no earlier re-cord of fish of this sort except for a few frag-mentary remains of acanthodians in near-shore marine Silurian deposits.Why this gap?"
